MTG’s special Avatar expansion will not become widely available in the coming days, however due to early access events this past weekend, a low-cost green spell experienced a surge in price.
Even during previews, this small creature garnered widespread focus. A creature with stats 2/2 requiring a single green and one generic mana, the card includes level 1 earthbending (perhaps the strongest within the elemental mechanics available). The major perk in its design is another power: Whenever mana is generated by tapping a creature, add an additional green mana.
At its cheapest, this card could be purchased at around $27. Following the early events, yet, the going rate has shot up to nearly $50 including listings priced at sixty dollars. Why are we seeing Vivi prices on this adorable card? Mainly due to the rapid resource generation it enables.
As it hits the battlefield, this creature transforms one land so it becomes a creature granting it earthbend. Combined with its other power, as long as it stays in play, every earthbent land generates double mana — along with other creatures in your control that generate mana.
The obvious go-to to combine with includes Llanowar Elves, a low-cost creature that produces a green resource. But numerous creatures that make mana out there. Druid of the Cowl is a higher-cost choice that’s a 1/3 for two mana in comparison.
By playing lands, dorks that generate resources, and Badgermole Cub, you may quickly play a massive pricey creature on the board within a few turns. The situation escalates out of control with continued aggression after that.
When adding another color using this method, examples including Fuel Tank Feaster, Ilysian Caryatid, and Paradise Druid work perfectly which produce any color of mana. And something like this powerful dryad lets you play an additional land per turn AND makes every land you control so they count as all basics. Another possibility is for example this six-mana enchantment, costing six mana provides all of your permanents the capacity to be tapped for any color mana — which covers each creature in play.
The cub may be OP when it comes to ramping up your mana generation, but how do you win for a deck like this? An often-seen solution already is this legendary creature. Power and toughness match your land count, and it changes all of your nontoken creatures to be Forests along with other subtypes. This means, every single creature you control is able to produce double green by tapping.
This additional option is another expensive, beefy creature which gains from lots of lands (similar to Ashaya, its stats are based on how many lands you have).
Nissa, Who Shakes the World is an excellent fit in this deck. Her static effect allows Forest lands produce extra green. (With a Badgermole Cub, so all earthbend forests yield three G.) Her plus ability acts as an early earthbend, adding counters on a land, which is great though it doesn't stack with earthbend. Her -8 ability, though, makes your entire land base unbreakable and lets you search for all the remaining forests in the deck. Once you trigger that ability, this typically means game over.
Badgermole Cub is nearly mandatory for any kind of decks using green and Avatar focusing on the earthbend mechanic. If you dip into Gruul colors, there’s this legendary card. This card features earthbend 4, and when damage is dealt to an opponent, all land creatures untap and may attack once more. While that version is a fan favorite Commander, the cute little Badgermole Cub is definitely going to remain among the top, possibly the desired card from this expansion.
